Anshu Kopparapu asks Senator Manka Dhingra and Senator Phil Fortunato about the effectiveness of background checks for firearm purchases. The Senators appreciated the thoughtfulness of her question and responded with elucidative information.
Question:
I’m Anshu Kopparapu, a junior at Eastlake High School in Sammamish. Washington has had universal background checks for firearm purchases in place since 2014. How do you evaluate their effectiveness in improving public safety, and what, if any, changes would you support to address gun violence while also protecting the rights of lawful gun owners?
