On The Issues – Transportation: Intercity Rail Development

Senate Page Dhruv Mantha asks Senate Transportation Chair, Marko Liias, and Senate Transportation Ranking Member, Curtis King, about whether they would support investing in an intercity passenger rail system.

Question: I am interested in the integration of a train system into Washington State. Other areas in the country have shown that intercity passenger rail can be financially viable without full public subsidy. Washington State has major population corridors like Seattle to Spokane and the I-5 corridor up to Vancouver BC that face severe highway congestion. What is your position on attracting private investment or public-private partnerships to develop intercity rail in Washington, and what do you see as the biggest barrier — funding, land acquisition, or political will?
