Teach With TVW: 2024 Re-Wire Conference

Teach with TVW covers the 2024 Re-Wire Conference, which brings together state legislators, lobbyists, advocates and more to discuss hot political topics and look ahead to the 2025 legislative session.

Each year, the Washington Observer, a political newsletter that covers everything happening in Washington state government, hosts the Re-Wire Conference, bringing together legislators, advocates, lobbyists, and state officials to discuss the upcoming legislative session. Learn about the importance of collaboration and the power of independent journalism in this 4 minute video that showcases this year’s Re-Wire Conference held on December 3, 2024.

The opening keynote of this year’s conference was delivered by incoming attorney general, Nick Brown, who highlighted the issues that he ran upon while also advocating for people to be curious about differing viewpoints. Following Brown’s speech, attendees attended panel discussions about the state of K-12 education, the housing crisis, and the upcoming 2025 Legislative Session, amongst others.

2025, as it is a long session, is a budget year, and legislators will have to contend with a budget deficit anywhere from 10-14 billion dollars. Therefore, many of the conversations revolved around how to pay for the programs already enacted by the legislature, including how to pay for the paramount duty of the state, which is K-12 education. Democratic leadership did not shy away from letting Washingtonians know that they will be exploring new ways to increase revenue in the state.
