Planted before the Civil War, the George Bush Butternut Tree recently fell down in a windstorm. There is history behind this tree, most notably from the person who planted it, George Bush. Bush, who was of mixed race, accompanied Michael T. Simmons and others in the first wagon train of settlers to what is now Thurston County, WA. He made a name for himself as a successful and very generous member of the community.
