Legislative Review: Cannabis for End-of-Life Care, Worship Protection & Fake Police Crackdown

Tonight on Legislative Review, Washington lawmakers consider proposals focused on end-of-life care, religious freedom, and public safety.

Cannabis for Terminally Ill Patients – House Bill 2152

The Senate Health & Long-Term Care Committee reviews a bill that would allow qualified end-of-life patients to use medical cannabis within licensed health care facilities, including hospices and nursing homes. Smoking and vaping would be prohibited, and facility staff would not be allowed to handle cannabis. Supporters say the bill provides dignity and comfort during a patient’s final days. The measure passed the House with broad bipartisan support, 89–6.

Protecting Access to Religious Worship – Senate Bill 5436

A bipartisan proposal would create a new criminal offense for recklessly blocking access to a place of worship or disrupting religious services. The bill also allows for civil action in certain cases. Supporters argue it strengthens protections for congregations amid rising threats and harassment, while some raise concerns about potential impacts on free speech and protest rights. The Senate passed the bill unanimously; it now awaits further consideration in the House.

Cracking Down on Fake Law Enforcement Claims – House Bill 2165

Lawmakers revisit a bill establishing a gross misdemeanor offense for falsely identifying as a peace officer. The measure would apply to knowingly displaying badges, insignia, or other items in a way that leads a reasonable person to believe someone is a commissioned officer. Supporters say it protects communities from impersonation schemes, while exemptions are included for retired officers, inherited memorabilia, and artistic or historical depictions.
