State of Washington v. Matthew Bentley
- In 2024, a jury convicted Matthew Bentley of two counts of assault in the first degree – each with a firearm enhancement, one count of unlawful possession of a firearm, and one count of malicious mischief in the third degree for an incident involving the shooting of two brothers—Alexander and Timothy Kabinov—at their home. Bentley appeals contending, among other things, that his right to present a defense and to a fair trial was violated, and the imposition of two firearm enhancements violates double jeopardy. In the Matter of the Parental Rights to S.L.P.
- In 2022, the Department of Children, Youth, and Families took S.L.P. into custody after a 911 call from a concerned individual who reported S.L.P. looked injured. His father signed an agreed order of dependency and was given visitation with S.L.P. but it was terminated because S.L.P. struggled with nightmares and dysregulated behavior. The father’s rights were later terminated. He appeals asserting that the Department failed to offer all reasonably available court-ordered and necessary services and failed to establish that continuation of the parent/child relationship would clearly diminish S.L.P.’s prospects for early integration into a stable and permanent home.
