Division 1 Court of Appeals

State of Washington v. Alan E. Dean

In 2023, law enforcement arrested Michael Dean for premeditated murder in the first degree for a “cold-case” committed in 1993. Dean asserted an “other suspect” defense at trial. The jury found Dean guilty. On appeal, Dean claims the trial court violated his due process rights by admitting his involuntary statement, the court abused its discretion in excluding evidence corroborating his other suspect defense, his counsel was ineffective, his constitutional right to confront witnesses was violated, and the prosecutor committed misconduct.
